What Is Titanium Dioxide For Paper?

Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) is a kind of function additive which has wide application in paper-making. As a white inorganic pigment, it is incorporated into paper, or applied as a coating pigment to deliver exceptional whiteness, brightness, and opacity. Different from other mineral fillers, TiO₂ is able to perform at very low adding levels, but also yield measurable improvements in optical properties – making it a technological and economical asset in contemporary paper production.

In paper production, two primary crystal forms are used: rutile and anatase. Rutile TiO₂ provides excellent transparency and weatherproof properties, making it a prime candidate for printers, wrappers, and special applications. Anatase grade, due to its softer grain structure, is generally chosen for tissue and some coated paper grades for which surface smoothness is a priority. The two classes are designed so that they are evenly distributed in the base of the paper, so that they can be evenly formed and printed on a high speed production line.

Specific Use Scenarios — titanium dioxide for paper

Paper Filling (Wet-End Addition)

Titania was added into the pulp paste in wet phase. In this case, TiO₂ particles are scattered across the fibre substrate, greatly enhancing the transparency and brightness of the panel from inside. This inner adding technique is particularly useful in the case of a printer or a typewriter, in which even distribution of light across the board is necessary to decrease the amount of ink loss and increase legibility.

Surface Sizing

In surface sizing applications, a liquid containing TiO2 is coated on the paper by means of a size press in the middle of the drying periods. This method strengthens the surface intensity, increases the brightness homogeneity, and makes the plate ready to be printed or applied later. Surface sizing with TiO₂ has been extensively applied to office paper and light coated paper grades for which a balance of smoothness, rigidity, and optical properties is needed.

Blade and Roll Coating

TiO₂ is a key pigment component in coating colour formulations applied by blade or roller coaters. Coupled with binding agents and copigments like GCC or kaolinite, it provides a smooth, high luminance coating that greatly enhances the quality of the print, the sticking point and the colour accuracy. This is essential for high quality coated paper for journals, catalogs, and high end business printing.

Specialty and Functional Paper Production

In addition to standard grades, TiO₂ plays an essential role in the manufacture of specialized papers including décor paper, laminate base paper, banknote paper, and filter paper. In décor and lamination applications, an extreme degree of transparency is needed to fully conceal the substrate under printed patterns — a performance level that only TiO₂ can reliably achieve at commercial feasible addition rates.

Tissue and Hygiene Paper

In tissue paper production, titanium dioxide is applied to enhance the vision and beauty of face tissue, toilet tissue, and napkin. The fine grain size and gentle wear properties enable it to blend well with the fine fibre web of a tissue panel, providing a luminous boost while maintaining flexibility, absorption, or skin contact.
